Moments Frozen In Time

For as long as I can recall, I have loved photographs. And not just photographs of any type, but specifically portraits of people.

When I was young, I would pour through albums, wanting to see pictures of generations before me that I had never met.

Portraits tell a story. Even formal black and white portraits allow you to see something about that person from long ago by looking into their eyes captured on film.

To see a grandparent you have never met, your parents as children, or elderly family members on their wedding day is something truly magical.

I still have some of these old black and white portraits on display in my own home. I pull them out to show my daughters images of my grandparents, whom my daughters never had the chance to meet.

As I tell my daughters stories of what my grandparents meant and still mean to my life, the tales are given new depth by the personalities and emotions that were captured on film so long ago.

When people lose a loved one, whether a parent, grandparent, or even a child, the very first thing they search for, and the one physical item they cling to, are the portraits of that person

Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever...it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.

So, moms (and dads), get in the portraits with your children.

Make time to have generational photos taken of your whole family together if you are lucky enough to still have your grandparents or great-grandparents on this earth. I can promise you that those photographs of you all together will mean more than any other physical item after that person has passed from this life to the next.

Photography is a way to freeze time—to capture a moment that would otherwise be long forgotten by the finite human brain. It allows us to immortalize a moment in time and share memories with future generations. It’s a way to leave a mark on this earth long after you and your family are gone.
